Silent Hill Revelation 3D: Director Michael J. Bassett Gets Scary Related Posts No Comments

Silent Hill Revelation 3D is the sequel to the 2006 film that took the wildly popular horror video game and brought it to the big screen. Director Michael J. Bassett was tapped to bring the sequel to life and as a huge player of the game, considered the task a huge honor.

Silent Hill Revelation 3D Still
“Being a fan of the game and realizing that this is a huge opportunity to create and play in this world, there’s not many movies where you get to make worlds. That is why I like fantasy and horror because you are building things from scratch,” Bassett said.

The Australian filmmaker knows how hard it is to get films of any genre made. “The opportunity to make a movie just doesn’t come along that often. It’s hard to get films made.”

After working on the film for years, he is clearly ecstatic about it finally opening this weekend. “I’ve been telling people about it for so long now and finally I get a chance to share it with them,” he said and laughed. “I’m kinda thrilled.”

If the latest Silent Hill film succeeds, much of the credit can go to the impeccable casting of lead Adelaide Clemens. The actress had previously only appeared in small budget Australian movies and Bassett believes the dramatic actress is exactly what the horror film needed.

“The more I think about it the luckier I feel I was to get Adelaide Clemens involved in this -- acting is such a natural talent for her -- to be able to put her into this world of Silent Hill and to see her blossom as a dramatic actress is a true blessing,” Bassett said.

“We’re making a horror movie and she took it very seriously. She’s an actress who is able to ground the whole thing. That’s the thing with horror, it would be very easy to make this with a typical scream queen and it wouldn’t be right. This world is real and unreal… and to have an actress who tackles it like a true drama is a true gift. She treated it like a proper drama, and not like a computer game adaptation and that is exactly what is needed to make it work.”

Adelaide Clemens in Silent Hill Revelation 3D
Many video games when they make the jump to the silver screen forget that they have to become a film with a beginning, middle and end as opposed to simply playing out the game onscreen. “I thought the first Silent Hill was the best game to screen adaptation I’d seen ever... in terms of capturing the visuals and truly getting what the game was. I think a movie like this has to be a visual experience,” Bassett admitted.

“While I admire the Paranormal Activities of the world, they do a different kind of horror. I love the idea of creating something new. It gives me a big palette and canvas."

Horror movies arrive all year long, but the Holy Grail of weekends for the genre is Halloween. Silent Hill Revelation 3D is the only new film released this year on Halloween which has the filmmaker beside himself.

“You can’t get a better time to release a horror film than now. It is the horror day and it is incredibly cool to be here in the U.S. It is a really significant holiday,” Bassett said.

“To be the horror movie that opens on that weekend is a true honor. I hope the audiences will completely freak out and I’d love to go back to this world if audiences are receptive to this movie.”

Susan Sarandon in heaven with 'Cloud Atlas'; 'You felt like you were in a circus'

Susan Sarandon says making "Cloud Atlas," adapted from the award-winning British novel, was a joyous theatrical experience in what seemed more like a "circus" than a movie set.

The Oscar-winning "Thelma and Louise" star plays four different characters in the visually rich movie by directing duo Andy and Lana Wachowski (of the "Matrix" saga), which opens in North America on Friday.

The nearly three-hour movie transports the filmgoer through six different eras, from the 19th to the 24th centuries, with a cast that also includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent.

"The structure is different (from the 2004 novel) but the essence is definitely there," said Sarandon, who was given a copy of the novel by the Wachowskis after she appeared in their 2008 movie "Speed Racer."

"I thought the book was amazing but I didn't think they were making a movie. But at a certain point when they had assembled the money and the people, I got a phone call and they just said 'We missed you, why don't you come to Berlin and do this? And we'll send you the script.'

MAKINGATLAS26F_2_WEB

Halle Berry as Meronym and Tom Hanks as Zachry in ‘Cloud Atlas’

"And I said: 'I'll come'... I hadn't read the script and I didn't know what parts or anything. I said yes, because I just think that they're so brilliant and so much fun and so sweet and I love them."

Sarandon, 66, who won the best actress Oscar for 1995's "Dead Man Walking," added: "I didn't know how they would make it into a movie. But that's their problem. I was up for the adventure and I kind of just jumped."

The film is arresting in that actors play several roles, male and female, in starkly different eras.

"In the book the characters don't have to be played by the same people, and I think that was really genius," Sarandon said.

It evokes the "feeling that being human is not about your color, your gender, time period or anything, but there's some kind of essence. And that's something that just happens subliminally as you watch the film," she said.

Sarandon said she was surprised at the atmosphere on set.

"I got there and it was kind of like a big theatrical repertory company. The spirit of that made me just forget about being nervous. There was just this playfulness that didn't let you be scared for too long," she said.

"I don't think I will ever find this feeling again. You felt like like you were in a circus, and that spirit was contagious," she added.

She admitted she had no idea what the final result would look like, but put her trust in the filmmakers.

"You know how some people are paranoid, have paranoia? Well, there is a word called pronoia, when you just assume that the universe is conspiring for you, not against you.

"I don't know if it's a real word but I believe in pronoia, and I think that the more you expect that, the more it actually works out."

This positive outlook is combined with a disarming modesty.

"For me the addictive part of being an actor, it's two things. The first one is the collaboration. Most of the other art forms are designed to be solitary, but film isn't, theater isn't.

"The second one is that you never feel like you get it right.

"When you see it sometimes you think: 'I wasn't brave enough. Why did I do that?' You try to make it intense and clear, but somehow you muddied it by doing too many things, you're a little lazy.

"And you think, 'Next time I'll get that'."

‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ trailer promises that John McClane will be back in latest addition to classic Bruce Willis franchise

It’s a good day for “Die Hard” fans.

Twentieth Century Fox released the first full-length trailer for “A Good Day to Die Hard,” the fifth installment of the franchise that stars Bruce Willis as the bane of both terrorists and property insurance adjusters.

This time around — after having exhausted all action possibilities stateside — Willis’ John McClane finds himself a fish out of water in Moscow.

DIEHARD27F_2_WEB

There will be guns, there will be terrorists, and there will Bruce Willis.

“Dad, try not to make an even bigger mess of things,” warns his daughter Lucy, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as she drops him off at the airport.

Judging from the more than one minute of explosions, bullets and punches that flash by during the 90-second trailer, he’s not a very good listener,

Yippee-ki-yay, moviegoers!

Directed by John Moore, “A Good Day to Die Hard” opens on Valentine’s Day 2013 and puts McClane in Russia, where he is forced to help his estranged son (Jai Courtney), who runs afoul of — you guessed it — terrorists.

The new film will be the fifth installment of the franchise that stars Bruce Willis as the bane of both terrorists and property insurance adjusters.

“Need a hug,” McClane asks his son in a rare break between action scenes.

“We’re not a hugging family,” John Jr. replies.

“Damn straight,” says McClane.

Lena Dunham raises eyebrows for suggestive Obama ad about her first time ... voting

"Girls" creator and star Lena Dunham has made a suggestive ad for President Obama's campaign about her first time … voting.

"The first time shouldn't be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy," the actress and writer confides to the camera. "Someone who really cares about and understands women."

Dressed in a white T-shirt that reveals the tattoo on her right bicep, Dunham suggestively portrays Obama as the man who took her voting virginity in the ad aimed at young women.

She says the “first time” should be with "a guy who cares whether you get health insurance and specifically whether you get birth control," she says, "The consequences are huge."

IN DEFENSE OF LENA DUNHAM

Only then does she reveal that she’s speaking politically, not sexually.

"You want to do it with a guy who brought the troops out of Iraq," she says.

"You don't want a guy who says, 'Oh hey, I'm at the library studying,' when really he's out not signing the Lilly Ledbetter act," she adds, referring to an equal pay bill signed into law by Obama. Romney has said he would not repeal the law, but he has also declined to say he would have signed it himself.

"Or thinks that gay people should never have beautiful, complicated weddings like the kind we see on Bravo or TLC all the time,” she continues.

"Think about how you want to spend those four years,” Dunham tells viewers. “In college age time, that's 150 years."

Vote.BarackObama.com via YouTube

Dunham tells young women that their “first time” should be with "a guy who cares whether you get health insurance and specifically whether you get birth control."

"My first time voting was amazing. It was this line in the sand — before I was a girl, now I was a woman," she says.

Her tone turns mock-suggestive again as she describes going to the polling station, where she "pulled back the curtain" to vote for the first time.

"I voted for Barack Obama," she concludes with a shy smile and shrug.

“Your first time? Get started here,” reads the YouTube caption, with a link to the Obama campaign website.

The ad immediately stirred up controversy, with conservatives slamming it as tasteless.

“(One) of the many sick things about this degrading Lena Dunham ‘lose your virginity to Barack’ ad? The Left thinks it’s ‘empowering’ to women,” wrote conservative commentator Monica Crowley.

“How could a president with two young, blossoming daughters release an ad as disgusting as this,” asked John Nolte of the conservative Breitbart News site.

Lena Dunham has earned a reputation for pushing the envelope in her HBO show “Girls” and in other appearances — like this revealing skit for the Emmys broadcast.

“Apparently Obama sees young women as helpless & sex-obsessed,” he added.

Others, however, embraced the edgy tone.

“My favorite chick strikes gold again! Brilliant,” wrote “The Vampire Diaries” actress Nina Dobrev on Twitter.

Dunham has earned a reputation for pushing the envelope. HBO's "Girls" has stirred up controversy for its gritty, unglamorous depictions of young women's bodies and sex lives.

At the Emmys last month, she was filmed eating a cake while sitting naked on a toilet for Jimmy Kimmel's opening comedy skit.

The campaign ad, which had more than 90,000 views on YouTube by Friday morning had received about 3,200 “likes,” but more than 4,700 “dislikes.”

Michelle Obama on Jimmy Kimmel: First Lady opens up about raising Sasha and Malia, urges public to vote early

When President Barack Obama gives a speech, he has just one request for his daughters Sasha and Malia: Don’t look bored.

“That was the instruction before he gave his speech at the DNC,” First Lady Michelle Obama told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday night’s show.

“We’re backstage and they’re playing around and they’re laughing and they’re giggling and he said, ‘Just act like you’re listening to me!’”

DOES MICHELLE PREFER THE PRESIDENT IN BOXERS OR BRIEFS? 'NONE OF THE ABOVE,' SHE SAYS!

MICHELLE CASTS ABSENTEE BALLOT, URGES SUPPORTERS TO VOTE EARLY

Even under the watchful eye of the Secret Service, keeping two adolescent girls in line is no easy task, Michelle admitted.

“The whole time, I’m clapping and looking over at them and I’m like, ‘Smile. Smile.’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, OK.’”

Prodded about disciplining her kids in public, the commander-in-chief’s wife said she does it the same way any other mother would, but, “you have to smile a little bit more when you’re the First Lady.

“But generally, they behave themselves really well.”

Kimmel teased Michelle about her persistent push for kids to eat healthy, asking if she was going to “force vegetables” down the throats of trick-or-treaters this Halloween.

“No,” she said, laughing. “There are times of the year when candy is good.”

Less than two weeks before Election Day, Michelle urged the public to vote early — an option in 34 states and Washington, D.C.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen on Election Day,” she explained. “Babysitters, you might be sick, car breaks down.”

She encouraged people to spend Nov. 6 helping others to hit the polls.

Michelle denied she would be even slightly relieved if her husband lost the presidential race.

“You know, even when Barack talked about entering politics, I was very hesitant,” she said. “But then I thought about the kind of person that I would want to lead the country, and I felt that to deny him that right would be selfish. So we’re in it.”

‘Cloud Atlas,’ with Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, uses recurring props  and characters to tie together a complex story

For a movie that’s unlike anything ever attempted on the big screen, don’t be surprised if “Cloud Atlas” leaves you with a profound sense of déjà vu.

That’s no accident.

To reinforce the themes of reincarnation and interconnectivity in the film, directors Lana and Andy Wachowski (“The Matrix”) and Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”) made sure the actors, the sets and the props were recycled as much as possible.

The film’s stars — Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw among them — were shuttled between roles in each of the film’s six segments, which span 500 years on a daily basis. That they didn’t know if they’d be shooting an 1850s period piece or a futuristic sci-fi thriller until they received the call sheet the night before made it all the more fun.

“It was weird because you’d say hello to Jim Sturgess in the morning as he was on his way to his trailer for his makeup on that set,” says Ben Whishaw, one of those who played multiple roles in the film. “And then a few hours later, you’d walk by an Asian man and you’d do a double take and go, ‘Oh my God, is that Jim under all of that?’ And that happened constantly, people not recognizing people.”

“We had the constant divergence at just about the time that I could not take much more of the self-loathing of Zachary the goat-herder [from the 22nd century] and I needed a break from that,” says Hanks. “It would be time to go off and shoot some of the evil Dr. Goose in the 1850s.”

This process was an intentional decision, planned a year before cameras even started rolling, to have the actors play souls that develop their characters over lifetimes, says Tykwer, who split directing duties in half with the Wachowskis.

“We felt that it was good that the actors weren’t consistently staying with one character, because we wanted them to act more like the larger character arc between all of their roles,” he said.

That philosophy was also used elsewhere in the film. Every one of its more than a hundred cuts, which go back and forth through time, was meticulously planned. An actor may walk into a doorway as one character, then emerge through another doorway as another character entirely.

Jeweled buttons that Hanks’ Dr. Goose eyes greedily in one scene reappear as beads around his goat-herder’s neck in another scene. A design on one character’s clothes from ’70s San Francisco shows up again as wallpaper in a safehouse in 2144 Seoul.

“We tried to keep some shapes and some themes going through different stories and through the sets,” says Hugh Bateup, one of the films’ two designers.

“Hopefully, if you see the movie, it won’t be obvious, but you’ll just feel the similarities.”

There were essentially two film shoots happening at the same time with two full crews. One was run by the Wachowskis and the other by Tykwer at different soundstages in Berlin’s mammoth Babelsberg studios. But the double-teaming helped get the film wrapped after just 50 days of shooting.

“All relevant and great art is always going to be inherently risky,” says Lana Wachowski.

'Chasing Mavericks' actress Abigail Spencer rides out her father’s legacy in new surf movie

Starring in a surfing movie was Abigail Spencer’s destiny, even if she didn’t want it to be.

The daughter of Pensacola surfing legend Yancy Spencer III grew up in her late father’s Florida surf shops before trading waves for movie scripts and relocating to Los Angeles.

But even while rising from roles in soap operas (“All My Children”) to stints in award-winning television shows (“Mad Men”) to parts in blockbuster movies (“Cowboys & Aliens”), Spencer couldn’t escape her fate.

With the surfing movie “Chasing Mavericks” now open, her life has come full circle.

“I knew this script deep down inside,” the 31-year-old actress says. “I grew up in this world as part of a surfing family. It’s as if I was meant to be in this movie.”

“Chasing Mavericks” follows the true story of young Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston) as he enlists the help of local surfing legend Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) in an attempt to surf one of the biggest waves on earth. Spencer plays Hesson’s wife, Brenda, who she subconsciously based on her own mother.

“My mother was the consummate surfer’s wife,” says Spencer, who is also in “The Wizard of Oz” prequel “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” set for release in 2013.

“She never put herself in front of the waves. She was just such a good model of understanding someone’s passion. She challenged and supported my father.”

Sadly, her father died last year of a heart attack on Valentine’s Day. He was 60.

“He was out in California visiting me and my young son, and he went out surfing for the afternoon at County Line (Malibu),” recalls Spencer. “He called me on the way out to say it was a beautiful day and the waves were perfect. Then, he called back a short time later.

“He was really calm. He said, ‘Abby, I’m having a heart attack. Call 911. I love you.’ When the fire chief found him, he was holding my mother’s Valentine’s Day card and looking out at the waves that changed his life.”

By her own admission, Spencer’s life “went into chaos” upon her father’s sudden death and when the opportunity to be in a new surf movie arose, she resisted.

“People kept saying, ‘You need to be in this movie for your father, for your legacy,’” she says. “But it was too soon after my father’s death. I didn’t know if I could handle it. The whole thing felt like too much.”

Spencer showed up two hours late for her audition, read her lines and left, not caring if she got the part. But destiny could not be denied and three months later, she was cast as Brenda.

“Still, nobody knew my personal connection to this movie,” she says. “So I sat everyone down and told them about my dad and how I grew up. Bringing my own story to this movie really made it bigger than life.”

And so, in honoring her father, Spencer became her mother.

According to the actress, “In the movie, Gerry [Gerard Butler] looks just like my father, especially the way he does his hair. And I look just like my mother. Only in hindsight did I realize that this is a piece of my life.”

Ironically, despite being the most experienced surfer onset, Spencer never stepped foot in the water while filming “Chasing Mavericks.” But that was just fine with her.

“I’m going to be totally honest,” she laughs. “I hate surfing the Pacific. The currents are really strong. I’m totally a Gulf Coast girl.”

2012 is the 50th anniversary year of the very first James Bond film, Dr. No, and now Daniel Craig is gearing up to reprise his role as 007 in Skyfall.

But could Idris Elba have won the part? As we reported last year, Elba met with producer Barbara Broccoli about playing Bond, but ultimately the role returned to Craig.

The Prometheus actor says he would be reluctant to be known as "the black James Bond," and rightfully so. But, apart from 50 years of familiarity with the character there is absolutely no reason a talented black actor such as Elba couldn't play the British spy.

Idris Elba Picture

Television and cinema is finally beginning to enter an era where characters need not be defined by their race. The best example of late would be Samuel L. Jackson taking on the role of Nick Fury in The Avengers, as well as fervent, albeit failed, push to make Community star Donald Glover the new Spider-Man.

Regardless, it is likely a moot point, as Craig is signed on to star in at least two more Bond films, and Elba is 40 years old. Do you think he would have made a good Bond? Let us know in the comments section!

Skyfall hits theaters November 9. Check out Adele's Skyfall theme song for a preview.

Movie News CS Video Exclusive: Craig, Daniel Craig ADD COMMENTS

When EON Productions was looking for their James Bond 007 for the 21st Century, they turned to Daniel Craig, an actor who had already established himself in strong dramas like Matthew Vaughn's Layer Cake, Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition, Steven Spielberg's Munich and others. It was a daring choice, but one that's definitely paid off as Craig has become one of the definitive Bonds in recent years.

It's been four years since Quantum of Solace and for his third go-round as Bond and the 23rd official Bond movie Skyfall, Craig reunites with director Sam Mendes who had him do a lot of new things like riding a motorcycle, as well as having some of the fun experienced by earlier Bonds, delivering one-liners and flirting with and bedding the beautiful women he meets while on his latest mission.

A few weeks back, ComingSoon.net attended the New York junket for Skyfall and had a chance to talk to Craig. Now mind you, we usually only get four minutes for these sorts of things, but in the video interview below, you can hear the actor talking about:

* Bringing vulnerability to James Bond
* Whether it helped to go back to "Casino Royale" for his first movie
* Some of the new challenges thrown Bond's way
* His scenes with Dame Judi Dench as M
* Whether it will be easier to jump into the next movie (He jokes that "Exploding volcanoes and underground submarines bases are the way forward")
* Whether he has any updates on when he and Fincher might make "The Girl Who Played with Fire" (He tells us they're not sure when it's going to happen)
* It's up to Sony to decide whether to make another Bond movie first

Skyfall opens internationally on Friday, October 26, but North Americans will have to wait until November 8 for the IMAX release and November 9 for conventional theaters. Look for interviews with director Sam Mendes, Javier Bardem and more in the coming weeks!

TV review: ‘Brainwashed’

The most shocking part of “Brainwashed,” some would argue, is making a TV show out of an experiment designed to determine whether an otherwise law-abiding person can be convinced through mind-control techniques to murder a complete stranger.

But that’s what the producers of this latest episode in Discovery's “Curiosity” series aim to do.

The result, for better or worse, is not as disturbing as the premise might lead us to fear.

The mind control comes from hypnotist Tom Silver, who starts with 185 applicants and gives them increasingly more difficult tests to determine who is most susceptible to his suggestions.

In one scene he takes 11 subjects to a restaurant and tells them under hypnosis to strip to their underwear. By their responses, he gauges which of the 11 will most readily abandon social norms.

As that scene suggests, the show walks a line between academic test-subject procedures and reality show melodrama.

Silver eventually gets to the shooting part — where, without spoiling the punch line, it turns out his command falls into more of a moral gray area.

The resolution definitely gets your attention. But many viewers may also come away from “Brainwashed” feeling like the patrons who are lured into a sideshow tent at the circus.

The extra quarter rarely buys fruit as shocking and forbidden as the pitchman’s spiel promised.

‘The Mentalist’ zooms in on Robin Tunney and Patrick Jane’s long-running flirtation

Just because Detective Kate Beckett on ABC’s “Castle” finally hooked up this season with her handsome consultant, don’t expect lip locks any time soon for Detective Teresa Lisbon and consultant Patrick Jane on CBS’ “The Mentalist.”

“It’s difficult sometimes, but I like how Lisbon and Jane maintain a distance,” says Robin Tunney, who plays Lisbon. “It keeps things more interesting, I think.”

It’s not that there’s no attraction between Lisbon and Jane, played by Simon Baker.

Their interest in each other has been an unspoken subtext of the show since the beginning — a start that will be revisited in detail Sunday at 10 p.m., when the 100th episode of “The Mentalist” spends its whole hour flashing back to the day Teresa met Patrick.

For the record, Jane is the same in episode 100 as he has been in the first 99: annoying, smug, calculating and manipulative, yet oddly charming.

He’s also sad, because he blames his arrogance for the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of a mysterious killer called Red John.

He comes to the police station a year after the murders to see if there has been any progress in catching Red John. He quickly realizes there has not.

Lisbon, who has just taken over the case, falls prey to several manipulations through which Jane hopes to start working on it himself. These eventually involve him in a separate murder case, which of course he solves.

She invites him to become a consultant, for reasons that occasionally strain logic, but do reflect her obvious attraction to him even when he drives her nuts.

“I like playing the relationship” with that ambivalence, says Tunney. “It’s a good way to explore who they are, how they think, how they feel about things.

“It’s fun to play it subtly and let the viewers figure out what’s going on.”

It helps that unlike Kate Beckett and her squeeze, Richard Castle, Lisbon and Jane have not been thrust into intimate personal situations. Also, while both are unattached, Jane’s neurotic obsession with the death of his wife makes him a poor prospect for a new romance at the moment.

That said, Tunney agrees they have a spark that adds intrigue to the show and could, at some point down the road, flicker into something more.

“Maybe in the end,” she says, “we’ll let the audience decide.”

Cloud Atlas Review: What Does it All Mean? Cloud Atlas Related Posts No Comments

First and foremost Cloud Atlas is the most ambitious film we've ever seen. The movie spans generations, continents and universes while its ensemble tackles a half dozen roles in six existentially connected storylines.

Cloud Atlas Stills
Tom Hanks and Halle Berry may lead the cast, but Cloud Atlas is truly a group effort on so many fronts. The success of the film lies with the astounding love of language and story in author David Mitchell’s blockbuster book. Filmmakers Tom Tykwer and Lana and Andy Wachowski penned a script and crafted a film worthy of the book’s scope and breadth.

Then there are the hundreds of donors across the globe that put money together, outside of the studio system, to ensure the $100 million “indie” film even saw the light of day. Creatively, everyone involved took a pay cut to ensure that Cloud Atlas be the earth-shaking movie it could be, as its ensemble of Hanks, Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Wishaw and James D’Arcy could then dive in and create a modern masterpiece.

Cloud Atlas begins with an astonishingly aged Hanks, sitting outside in the dark, walking stick in hand, telling a story that sets the stage for our adventure meets love story meets sci-fi epic that delves into the meaning of human existence and our inner-connectiveness and the power of that when it is consciously realized by those who bear “the mark.”

Hugh Grant in Cloud Atlas
“The mark” is a birthmark on six different characters that looks like a shooting star. There is one in each of the six storylines and how they interconnect is nothing short of ingenious storytelling. Mitchell may have provided the framework, but the Wachowskis and Tykwer have performed a movie miracle by pulling out the most cinematically worthy moments in the book and weaving them in a web that makes sense, resonates and most importantly, makes you forget that you’re witnessing a three-hour film.

Among the highlights for Movie Fanatic is the part of the story involving the tragic tale of love between Winshaw’s Robert Frobisher and D’Arcy’s Sixsmith. Prepare for a weep of the highest nature as their story progresses. Berry and Hanks show killer chemistry on several fronts, from the 1970s San Francisco-set journalism exposé on nuclear power segment to the future (or is it past?) post-apocalyptic tribal journey that audiences gradually learn may hold the key to all of the intertwining plots.

Then, there is the wizardry of Weaving. The star of the upcoming The Hobbit is a clear antagonist throughout Cloud Atlas, yet the six parts he plays are so varied in their motivations that it allows the actor to push himself further into a pitch-perfect performance across the entire film that will go down as his absolute best.

Halle Berry, Tom Hanks Hugh Grant Cloud Atlas
Our screening was weeks ago and yet in the time that has passed between then and the writing of this Cloud Atlas review, this writer cannot shake it still. The film produces a rush of adjectives, not the least of which is: Profound, brilliant, beautiful, unforgettable and epic.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Matthew Vaughn leaves X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Seismic superhero news this morning, as Matthew Vaughn has reportedly dropped out of directing X-Men: Days Of Future Past, the sequel to his well-received series reboot, X-Men: First Class.

At present, no reason has been given for Vaughn’s departure, although he will still remain involved with the project as producer. The move mirrors his involvement on Kick-Ass 2, another sequel he declined to direct.

With the film pencilled in for a 2014 release date, Fox is expected to move fast to find a replacement for Vaughn, and according to Deadline, the man at the top of their list is none other than Bryan Singer.

Singer was of course the director of the first two X-Men films and also worked as a producer and writer on First Class, so his appointment would be the obvious choice. It was a big disappointment when he left the franchise in favour of Superman Returns, and we’d like to see him return to a universe he already knows inside out.

Expect further news on a replacement in the coming weeks, with filming set to commence early in the new year. X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens in the UK on 18 July 2014.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Arnold Schwarzenegger will return as Conan

Not only has Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to Hollywood, he’s doing so with a vengeance, with a reprisal of his role as Conan the Barbarian the latest addition to his increasingly busy slate.

Schwarzenegger will team up with Universal to revive the flagging franchise with The Legend Of Conan, a follow-up story that will gloss over the events of the Arnie-starring sequel and the disappointing 2011 reboot.

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior,” says producer Fredrik Malmberg, “and this is the take of the film we will make. It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”

Screenwriter Chris Morgan is currently hard at work on the script, and can’t quite believe his luck from the sounds of his gushing tribute to the original.

“After the original seminal movie, all that came after looked silly to me,” says Morgan. “Robert E Howard’s mythology and some great philosophy from Nietzsche to Atilla the Hun was layered in the original film. People say, he didn’t speak for the first 20 minutes of the film, but that was calculated in depicting this man who takes control of life with his own hand.

“This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story. I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn’t touch it unless we came up with something worthy. We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan’s Unforgiven.”

Universal is apparently pencilling this one in for 2014, so expect to hear word on a director and supporting cast in the next few months. Until then, we’ll leave the last word to Arnie…

“I always loved the Conan character and I’m honoured to be asked to step into the role once again,” says Schwarzenegger. “I can’t wait to work with Universal and the great team of Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan to develop the next step of this truly epic story.”

New York's movie screens load up on horror for Halloween

Given that we boast the most spectacular Halloween parade in the country, New Yorkers obviously know this holiday’s not just for kids.

But those who don’t feel ready to don a costume and march up Sixth Ave. do have other options. What better way to celebrate spookiness, for example, than by sitting in a pitch-dark room scaring oneself silly? Whether you’re more interested in slasher flicks or psychological terror, big-screen chills await all weekend ... and beyond ...

MIDNIGHT MOVIES

If you’re planning to stay up late, you’ll have some difficult decisions to make tonight and tomorrow. The Landmark Sunshine has Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead 2,” and thanks to Raimi’s twisted sense of humor, this is a horror franchise worth revisiting (landmarktheatres.com).

Williamsburg’s Spectacle Theatre will screen 1981’s “Venom,” a botched-kidnapping movie that was meant to be directed by Tobe Hooper; after “creative differences” with notoriously difficult star Klaus Kinski, Hooper was replaced by Piers Haggard (spectacletheater.com).

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without an interactive “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which you can catch at the Chelsea Clearview (clearviewcinemas.com). But if you’ve done the Time Warp once too often, IFC is offering shadowcast screenings of “Ghostbusters” this weekend, hosted by performance group the Minions of Gozer (ifccenter.com).

CREEPY CLASSICS

The originals are often the best, and the city’s art houses are going all out in their attempts to terrify us.

Film Forum has a rare print of the Australian freakout “Wake in Fright” through Tuesday, and follows that up on Wednesday with “Repulsion,” Roman Polanski’s descent into sexual dread (filmforum.org).

Speaking of psychosexual head trips, the Museum of the Moving Image has the mother of them all, in Hitchcock’s eternally chilling “Psycho” (movingimage.us). MoMI’s also got “The Birds,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Poltergeist.” But Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema will go back even further, with 1922’s silent masterpiece “Nosferatu” (nitehawkcinema.com).

DEADLY DISCOVERIES

Many of the films in Lincoln Center’s “Scary Movies” program are actually decades old, but have rarely been seen since their release. Now’s your chance to catch Wes Craven’s “Deadly Blessing,” featuring an unknown Sharon Stone, or Martin Sheen in John Schlesinger’s Santeria thriller “The Believers” (filmlinc.com). BAM’s “For Demon Lovers” series is similarly geared toward nostalgists, with the highlight being 1977’s oddly unsettling “Demon Seed,” in which Julie Christie’s computer aims to impregnate her (bam.org).

MORE TREATS THAN TRICKS

Looking for something new? You’ll find a few frights in the recently released “Silent Hill: Revelation,” “Paranormal Activity 4 ” and “Sinister. ” But the real winners are this year’s crop of barely scary kid flicks. If the little goblins in your life could use a break from Halloween parties, bring them to the multiplex for the animated comedies “ParaNorman ” or “Hotel Transylvania. ” And you don’t even need to be a kid to enjoy Tim Burton’s stop-motion charmer “Frankenweenie, ” a black-and-white homage to classic fright films that’s designed to enchant all ages.

Many of these programs are running through the 31st; for schedules, tickets, and directions, visit each venue’s website.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Kristen Stewart gets tough in new Breaking Dawn clip: watch now

The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has released a new clip online, in which Bella sets about demonstrating that she’s every bit as badass as her toothy chums.

Kellan Lutz is her antagonist in chief, ostentatiously sporting a bicep-revealing vest as he mocks her for being the weak link in their merry little band.

Cue an arm-wrestling contest in which the musclebound lunk discovers there’s more to the new Mrs Cullen than meets the eye.

Take a look below…

The new film sees the Cullens bond together against the Volturi as the council of vampire elders come looking for their daughter, Renesmee. There stands to be quite the smackdown.

Directed by Bill Condon and co-starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 opens in the UK on 16 November 2012.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Bradley Cooper in line for Cameron Crowe’s new movie

Cameron Crowe’s Deep Tiki has been on the back-burner for an age, with the director initially signing on to helm the project back in 2008. However, things finally appear to be moving forward…

Emma Stone has already been cast to play the film’s female lead, with Bradley Cooper reportedly in talks to star opposite her. The film had initially been lined up for Reese Witherspoon and Ben Stiller.

Deep Tiki
tells the story of a military contractor presumed dead after an incident in Afghanistan, who uses his apparent demise to carve out a whole new life for himself.

The admittedly off-beam plot then sees our hero dispatched to Hawaii in order to convince a spiritual leader to give his blessing to a military satellite launch, a process that proves harder than expected.

Sounds a little barmy then, but we’re just happy to see Crowe back in the groove of filmmaking again after the six-year gap between Elizabethtown and We Bought A Zoo. Deep Tiki is set to begin shooting next spring.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Rumour: Johnny Depp to star in Wally Pfister’s directorial debut?

Having sparked controversy recently by slagging off The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises cinematographer is set to make his directorial debut, which may well star Johnny Depp.

Depp is reportedly in discussions to head up Transcendence, described as a kind of cross between Inception and 2001, while also sounding rather a lot like TRON according to THR’s plot synopsis.

“The story centres on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness,” reports the site. “Depp will play a husband who gets sucked into the computer.”

Definitely sounds like TRON to us, and given Pfister’s recent pedigree, we can expect it to look rather special if nothing else. It also looks a decent move for Depp, and a welcome break from his usual brand of quirk.

Pfister has reportedly met with Noomi Rapace to discuss playing the female lead, while James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire have also been considered for Depp’s role. Christoph Waltz is also thought to be in the running for a supporting part. Colour us intrigued…

Movie review: ‘Chasing Mavericks’

The sinking feeling starts as soon as “Chasing Mavericks” opens, with Gerard Butler’s solemn narration: “We all come from the sea,” he intones, “but we are not all of the sea.”

Profound, dude.

As it turns out, the only truly interesting element about this clichéd surfer flick is that it was made by celebrated directors Michael Apted (“Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the “Seven Up” documentary series) and Curtis Hanson (“L.A. Confidential,” “8 Mile’). How two talented and experienced filmmakers combined to create such an uninspired effort is a mystery that remains unsolved.

Everything else in their formulaic biopic, however, is spelled out as obviously as possible. Butler plays true-life Santa Cruz surf legend Frosty Hesson, who reluctantly agrees to teach his 15-year-old neighbor, Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston), everything he knows. Jay’s goal is to surf the near-mythical Mavericks wave, though it intimidates even the most experienced pros.

Screenwriter Kario Salem delivers an endless supply of obstacles, without satisfactorily resolving any of them. Jay’s mom (Elisabeth Shue) is a drunken layabout; his dad disappeared years ago. His crush (Leven Rambin) is enigmatically distant; his best friend (Devin Crittenden) buys drugs from the local bully (Taylor Handley). And Frosty has his own issues, which his adoring wife (Abigail Spencer) tries to repair by encouraging him to mentor Jay. If you’re not sure how to respond to all this drama, Chad Fischer’s score will guide you.

Though the film is set primarily in 1994, Weston plays Jay like he’s in a “Gidget” movie, turning optimism into saintly naïveté. The gruff Butler, who can be overly abrasive in romantic comedies, should provide some necessary edge. But he lacks the Zen shagginess that could have made Frosty more appealing.

There is an interesting story in the life of Moriarity, whose single-minded passion redefined his life. A documentary might have done him greater justice and it’s curious that Apted, in particular, didn’t consider a non-fiction approach. As it is, we too perpetually long for the ocean, the only place where the movie’s clutter drops away.

Movie News Adam Sandlers Saddles Up For Ridiculous 6 ADD COMMENTS

Adam Sandler is going to be moving to Paramount Pictures for his next feature film, set to shoot in April 2013. Deadline has now revealed that the title of the project, known to be a comedy western, is Ridiculous 6.

Plot details have not yet been confirmed by the studio, but the film is likely a parody of John Sturges' iconic tale, The Magnificent Seven, in turn inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. The 1960 film itself is targeted for a remake with Tom Cruise tentatively attached to star.

Sandler's most recent live-action comedies, Jack & Jill and That's My Boy have under-performed at the box office, though his recently-released family film, Hotel Transylvania, has grossed more than $188 million worldwide.

Next summer, Sandler will star in his first sequel, Grown Ups 2, reuniting him with Happy Madison regulars Kevin James, David Spade, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider. It's likely that, if Ridiculous 6 is, indeed, an ensemble project, several of those names could be joining the cast in the near future.

Movie review: ‘Fun Size’

While there have been a bounty of live-action family films that take place over Thanksgiving and Christmas, very few try to represent realistically that most American of holidays, Halloween. The comedy “Fun Size” captures the trashiness and confusion of being swarmed not just by by greedy kids on sugar highs but also hard-partying adults living out fantasies on a night known for overindulgence and bad behavior.

Director Josh Schwartz (TV’s “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl”) gets an innocent, innocuous performance from lovely Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice as high schooler Wren, dressed up as Dorothy and having to miss a party as she searches Cleveland for her missing little brother. The nerdy but beautiful teen with a crush on the school stud is John Hughes paint-by-numbers, but here everyone’s a bit of a freak — including Wren’s mute brother Albert and his adult best friend, Fuzzy.

Among the other grownups, Chelsea Handler brings a pathos as Wren and Albert’s mother, going through a funny-sad nervous breakdown. By the end of this romp, “Fun Size” actually accomplished something charming: sentimentality without normality.

Movie News Matt Bomer, Jerry OConnell, Liv Tyler and More Board Space Station 76 ADD COMMENTS

Writer/director Jack Plotnick has just wrapped production on his feature film debut, an indie sci-fi comedy called Space Station 76. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the cast for the film includes Matt Bomer, Marisa Coughlan, Jerry OConnell, Kali Rocha, Kylie Rogers, Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson.

The film has already launched an interactive website at spacestation76.com, offering a taste of the project's retro tone. The official synopsis reads as follows:

For Misty, a thirty year-old sexpot housewife, one of the benefits of living on the Omega 76 Space Station is getting to spend time with Dr. Bot, a valium-prescribing therapist droid. This frustrates her technician husband, Ted, who desperately wishes they could go back to the time when she was in love with him, and fully engaged with the raising of their daughter, Sunshine. Although only seven years old, Sunshines been left to fend for herself on the ship, as Ted and Misty are constantly occupied with their mundane jobs and pursuits of self-fulfillment.

Life on the space station really isnt much different than it was in suburban communities of the 70s, except for maybe the added danger of having Captain Glenn Terry, a bitter, suicidal wreck of a man, at the helm of the ship. Drowning in resentment and struggling with his bisexuality, Glen hides the secret that he had a rocky affair with his ex-Assistant Captain, Daniel, who left the ship under mysterious circumstances. Replacing him is Jesssica Marlowe, an ambitious and mostly misunderstood feminist, whose arrival on the ship inadvertently ignites tensions among everyone. The Omega 76 is her chance to prove that a woman can succeed in a mans world, and her way of proving to herself that a having a career can be just as meaningful as having a family. But shes not fooling anyone. Her by-the-books mentality starts to unravel the Captain, and her fast friendship with Sunshine sparks a degree of jealousy in Misty. Accustomed to being the center of her daughters world, self-absorbed Misty doesn't respond well to having to compete for attention with this new woman in power.

Dissatisfied with the monotony of her domestic routine, however unable to take responsibility for her life, Misty turns to Dr. Bot for solace. Shes not the only one self-medicating Glenns grief over losing Daniel drives him to drink way more than a Captain should. Especially while driving. Glenn suffers a botched reconnection with his former lover and several embarrassing suicide attempts. But his life isn't the only one in danger a careless mistake on the bridge causes a near-miss with an asteroid the size of Texas. Jessica becomes furious with his incompetence, and the two constantly butt heads. The only people not at odds with each other are Jessica and Ted: two lonely souls whose friendship moves quickly past the friend zone. When it becomes obvious that her neglected husband also prefers Jessica over her, Misty takes aim.

Caught in the crosshairs is little Sunshine, set adrift like a rover in the Me Decade of space. As the adults search for meaning within their empty lives, barely contained lust, jealousy, and anger all bubble to the surface. The ships annual holiday party is their chance for reconciliation. Will they make amends and do whats best for the future, or will their lives fall silently into chaos?

Dan Burks, Katherine Ann McGregor, Joel Michaely, Ed Parks and Rachel Ward are producing with Niraj Bhatia, Frank Mele and Plotnick himself executive producing.

Movie News Genndy Tartakovsky's New Short Film Goodnight, Mr. Foot Hits Theaters Tomorrow COMMENTS (1) Posted by: ADD COMMENTS

Sony Pictures Animation has announced that a new short film by Genndy Tartakovsky, "Goodnight, Mr. Foot", will be added to screenings of the director's Hotel Transylvania beginning tomorrow, October 26 at all digital showings in Regal Entertainment Group Cinemas.

A 13-time Emmy nominee (and three-time Emmy winner), Tartakovsky ("Dexters Laboratory," "Samurai Jack," "Star Wars: Clone Wars"), animated every key frame of the new short, photo from which you can check out below.

The short stars none other than the legendary monster Bigfoot and follows his adventure as he, too, checks in to Draculas five-stake resort in search of a little R-and-R, only to find himself faced with an enthusiastic witch-maid, eager to make Mr. Foots stay a memorable one.

Tartakovsky commented, "After we finished 'Hotel Transylvania', I got an itch to animate! Taking inspiration from my favorite directors Bob Clampett, Tex Avery, and Chuck Jones I animated a short cartoon in the traditional 2D style. It was difficult and exhilarating all at once and I hope people will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it."

To commemorate the debut of the animated short, an exclusive new collectible one-sheetdesigned by Tartakovsky himselfwill also be given away at all showings of Hotel Transylvania in Carmike Cinemas nationwide from October 26 (while supplies last).

The feature film debut of Hotel Transylvania proved to be the biggest September opening for a film in U.S. history, and went on to open #1 in many territories around the world, including Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, Malaysia Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, and Sweden.

Movie News Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning for The Legend of Conan COMMENTS (8) Posted by: Posted by: Posted by: Posted by: Posted by: Posted by: Posted by: Posted by: ADD COMMENTS

Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to once again crush his enemies, see them driven before him and to hear the lamentation of their women. Deadline reports that the actor, who starred in 1982's Conan the Barbarian and in 1984's Conan the Destroyer, will reprise his role as the Cimmerian warrior in The Legend of Conan, a new Robert E. Howard adaptation in the works from Universal Pictures.

Details are few on the plot of the new film, but it is said to ignore the events of both Conan the Destroyer and of the most recent reboot, 2011's Conan the Barbarian, which features "Game of Thrones" star Jason Momoa in the lead.

The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make, producer Frederik Malmberg tells the site about where The Legend of Conan picks up. Its that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows hell be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.

Following his time in politics, Schwarzenegger has been lining up projects left and right. He recently starred in The Expendables 2 and will re-team with Sylvester Stallone in next year's The Tomb. Schwarzenegger can next be seen in The Last Stand, the english language debut of director Kim Jee-Woon, and is currently filming David Ayer's Ten, an action drama that revealed its first behind-the-scenes photo earlier today.

Malmberg and Chris Morgan are attached to produce The Legend of Conan. Morgan has already plotted the story himself and may also provide the screenplay, aiming for a summer 2014 release.
