Only NFL football can tackle AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ in ratings battle

The zombies on AMC's "The Walking Dead" don't only eat the living, they are starting to devour other television shows as well.

Sunday night's episode of "The Walking Dead," second of the new season, drew 9.547 million viewers during its 9 p.m. time slot.

That's more viewers than either ABC's "Revenge" or CBS's "Amazing Race" - both considered solid broadcast hits - at the same hour.

The horror drama series was beaten only by NBC's pro football game.

"The Walking Dead" also drew another 3.293 million viewers for an instant rerun at 10 p.m.

Making the news even sweeter for AMC, "Walking Dead" drew a much higher share of adults 18-49 than any other Sunday night show except football.

The success of "Walking Dead" very likely was one factor in AMC being able to resolve its dispute with the Dish network. Dish had dropped AMC, maintaining it didn't get enough viewers to justify the fees Dish was paying to carry it.

Nine million-plus viewers also means "Walking Dead" has about three times the same-day audience as AMC's two most critically acclaimed shows, "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad."

AMC has always reported that "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" have millions of viewers who tape the shows and watch them later.
