President Obama tells the two feuding sides in the NHL lockout  to ‘get this done’ during ‘Tonight Show’ appearance with Jay Leno

The President of the United States has a message for the NHL and its players' association: "Get this done."

President Barack Obama appeared on 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' on Wednesday night and responded during a Q&A session to a viewer's question on whether the President could pull some strings to help end the NHL lockout.

"You know, I do have a comment on this," Obama said. "Every time these things happen I just want to remind the owners and the players: you guys make money because you've got a whole bunch of fans out there who are working really hard, they buy tickets, they're watching on TV. Y'all should be able to figure this out. Get this done."

Good luck getting the NHL's 30 owners to heed Obama's advice. Like Congress, the 23 United States-based NHL owners are predominantly Republican, as evidenced by a campaign contribution of 2.4 to 1 in favor of the Republican party for the current election cycle as of August, as reported by the New York Times.

The NHL lockout entered its 40th day on Thursday, which the league also called the deadline to strike a deal that would save the full 82-game season. Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday at a press conference to announce the Islanders move to Brooklyn in 2015-16 that an 82-game season "is not going to be a reality."

NHLPA chief Donald Fehr responded by calling that an "artificial deadline." But as of Thursday morning, neither side anticipated meeting anytime soon.
