Cinemax scored a direct hit last year with its first original series, “Strike Back,” an international action thriller that got a little confusing, but made up for it with lots of loud explosions and protracted gunfights.
The momentum falters with “Hunted,” despite the exotic cool of Melissa George in the lead role.
George plays Sam Hunter, a highly skilled operative who works for a private security firm called Byzantine. Subtlety is not a priority here.
When we meet Sam, she’s about to have a bad encounter with mysterious villains. The encounter is designed, apparently, to set up the larger question of who, if anyone, Sam can trust.
After a modest fast-forward she moves onto a case that we can at least understand.
She must infiltrate the security net of Jack Turner (Patrick Malahide), a rich man up to no good. He seems to have liquidated all his considerable assets to bid on a dam in Pakistan, and Byzantine wants, for starters, to know why.
This makes “Hunted” sound more accessible than it is, however. While she’s infiltrating, other players are swirling around making mysterious moves that we have to believe are going to be somehow connected.
No guarantees, though, which makes “Hunted” a little hard to grasp without the comforting certainty of constant firefights.
George’s action scenes are solid. There just aren’t enough of them, and “Hunted” isn’t comprehensible enough for the cerebral part to carry as much of the show as it has to.
Being on Cinemax, though, it’s got some time to streamline things, and with George at the center, let’s hope it can.
