Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods gets a trailer: watch now

The Croods, the caveman CG-animation from DreamWorks has revealed a new trailer online (via iTunes Movie Trailers).

Set to hit cinemas next year, the Flintstones-esque fable documents the lives of a cave-family who never wander far from their abode under the stern of advice of their patriarch, Grug (Nicolas Cage, working the laidback surfer-dude vibe).

When ‘free-spirited’ daughter Eep (Emma Stone), sets off on her own little adventure, the Croods discover that there’s a world beyond their musty hovel.

Taking place circa… honestly, we’ve got know idea when this is set. It seems to be taking a leaf out of the Ice Age history books (and don’t expect to find the beasts they encounter in any encyclopedia).

Watch the first trailer for The Croods below now:

The first poster for The Croods has also been unveiled:

The Croods opens in the UK on 22 March 2013.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Patrick Stewart to return to the X-Men universe?

Having run aground slightly toward the end of the noughties, the X-Men franchise is in rude health once more, with long-awaited sequel The Wolverine finally making its way towards cinemas, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past also in the pipeline.

All this success seems to have piqued the interest of series veteran Patrick Stewart, who suggested he might be in line for a return, when quizzed by a fan at the Montreal Comic Convention.

"I think there is every possibility," he said, when asked whether he might return to the franchise. Confusingly, he then began to list the names of some of his female co-stars ("Halle Berry! Famke Janssen! Rebecca Stamos! Anna Paquin!") before concluding, "Yes, I'll be reprising..."

Where exactly he might fit in remains to be seen, although it has been suggested that there will be a time-travel element in Days Of Future Past, so perhaps he might play an older incarnation of James McAvoy?

Or perhaps he’s just messing with us. In any case, it’s just one more reason to eagerly await the return of the mutants, when X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens in the UK on 18 July 2014.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Rian Johnson wants to direct Doctor Who

Looper finally hits cinemas this Friday. We loved it so much we called it "This decade's Matrix." Which it definitely, definitely is. It's also this decade's Terminator, Akira, and 12 Monkeys

And we love Looper's director, Rian Johnson, even more than all of those things.

So, imagine our excitement when we were scrolling through Reddit's recent AMA with Johnson and came across the following - glorious - quote.

When asked what TV show he'd love to guest-direct an episode of, he said: "What I'd really kill to try, although it would be terrifying because I'm such a big fan of it? Doctor Who."

The director of Looper directing an episode of Doctor Who?

You may well already know how we feel about that idea, because there's every chance you heard the sound of us bellowing: "Yes please, that would be very nice," at the top of our voices about five minutes ago.

The pairing would make complete sense - the current incarnation of Who mixes The Brothers Bloom's hipster quirk with Looper's serious take on time travel SF, and Johnson's Breaking Bad episode is still regarded as a firm fan favourite.

With Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary around the corner, and with Peter Jackson also expressing a desire to direct an episode, would it be too much to ask the BBC to tear up whatever plans they have for next year and just let these two men do whatever they want for a season or ten?
