'Jack Reacher' trailer released: Tom Cruise muscles in on potential franchise as Lee Child's popular hero

Tom Cruise’s mission — and he’s obviously chosen to accept it — is to kickstart another action franchise.

Paramount released the second trailer for “Jack Reacher” Wednesday, which introduces moviegoers to the popular Army cop-turned-badass do-gooder created by author Lee Child.

“Jack Reacher is a ghost, served in the military police, a brilliant investigator, a troublemaker too,” it’s explained in voiceover.

The story revolves around Reacher’s investigation into the innocence of a military sniper who’s accused of gunning down five civilians.

When Cruise was first tapped as the titular renegade, some Child fans grumbled over the casting — especially since Reacher is supposed to be a 6-foot-5 hulk, almost a foot taller than the actor.

But Cruise got an important vote of confidence from the author himself.

“Which actor does match Reacher physically?” Child (the pen name for Jim Grant) asked Empire magazine last year. “[What] people forget is that Tom Cruise is quite possibly the best actor of his generation.”

And watching Cruise punch his way through several thugs and fishtailing his Chevrolet Chevelle SS through a chase with police, it’s clear the 50-year-old actor has the action chops.

“They want me to run, but I’ll finish this,” says Cruise’s Reacher. “I have nothing to lose, if you’re smart, that scares you.”

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, “Jack Reacher” hits theaters on Dec. 21. The film co-stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog (!).

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies New trailer for Jack Reacher: watch now

The new trailer has arrived for forthcoming Tom Cruise actioner Jack Reacher, in which the titular badass shows off his arse-kicking capabilities.

Cruise plays Reacher, a former military man drafted into police service when a serial sniper starts picking off victims left right and centre. Something of a maverick, Reacher isn’t afraid to break a few rules along the way… or a few necks.

The new trailer contains a hell of a lot of action, as Cruise brawls his way through wave after wave of ne’er-do-wells. If you weren’t convinced by little Tom as a fully paid-up hard-man, this might go some way toward changing your mind.

Check it out, below…

Exciting stuff, with Reacher proving a far grittier proposition from the fast-talking smoothies Cruise usually plays. In this one he genuinely seems like a man who shouldn’t be trifled with.

Adapted from Lee Child’s One Shot from writer/director Chris McQuarrie, and co-starring Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Richard Jenkins, Jack Reacher will open in the UK on 26 December 2012.

Jack Reacher Trailer Drops: On Second Thought, I'd Like to Kill You Related Posts No Comments

Tom Cruise is gettin' all badass in this new Jack Reacher trailer. He calls a guy back to tell him that he's had a moment to think it over, and he'd like to kill him. I'm going to try that next time I'm on a 2-hour call with my bank.

Based on the book One Shot by Lee Child, Jack Reacher tells the story of an ex-military cop who is called upon to prove the innocence of a man charged with murder. A once open-and-shut case grows much more complex.

Rosamund Pike (The World's End), Richard Jenkins (Cabin in the Woods), Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo round out the Jack Reacher cast.

Christopher McQuarrie directs. Jack Reacher will hit theaters December 21.

Movie News Rupert Sanders to Helm The Juliet ADD COMMENTS

Although his name was, just last week, said to be in the running to take on Van Helsing with Tom Cruise, producer Frank Beddor has now confirmed that Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sander's next project will be The Juliet, an adaptation of Alfred Bester's 1954 short story "Fondly Fahrenheit". He also posted an artistic rendering of the project's sci-fi world which you can check out below.

In development for some time, Beddor spoke about the project in a 2010 interview with I Am Entertainment Magazine.

"Its lovers on the run in space," Beddor said, "so think Bonnie and Clyde in space, but with a very unique Bonnie who has a secret. The tone of it is close to the Bourne Identity franchise."

Beddor is producing alongside Chuck Roven with a screenplay by Henry Bean. Production is slated to begin sometime in 2013.

It's currently unclear whether or not Sanders' commitment to The Juliet will prevent him from signing on for Van Helsing, but check back for details as soon as they become available.

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Rupert Sanders to direct Van Helsing?

Tom Cruise's starring vehicle Van Helsing looks to have got itself up and running once again, with Rupert Sanders reportedly in line to take on directorial duties.

Universal has long been keen on reviving the story of the veteran vampire-hunter, although all had gone quiet on the project since it was announced that Tom Cruise would be starring some months ago.

Now it seems that the studio has identified its first choice to fill the director's chair, with Rupert Sanders apparently the man for the job.

If he were to accept the task it would likely mean him stepping down from the sequel to Snow White And the Huntsman, a move that would allow him to continue his working relationship with Universal while avoiding the tabloid attention the sequel would no doubt garner with his name attached.

Cruise's busy schedule means that a director needs to be appointed sooner rather than later, and with Sanders a known quantity to studio heads, he may be seen as a safe pair of hands. Expect an official confirmation either way in the coming weeks...
