TV review: HBO’s ‘The Girl’

"The Girl," a disturbing film that suggests famed director Alfred Hitchcock behaved like a psychotic lout toward leading lady Tippi Hedren during their two movies together, could have used the Hitchcock touch.

The story, based on Hedren’s account of their schizophrenic relationship, paints a dark picture of “Hitch,” who seems to have been old-school in the sense that everyone was expected to defer to his every neurotic whim.

It feels choppy in spots, a point magnified because it’s about a director whose storytelling was famously seamless right up through his two movies with Hedren, “The Birds” and “Marnie.”

Still, superb performances by Toby Jones as Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Hedren keep the story alive and moving.

Jones has the harder job, playing a creepy man who directed creepy movies. Hitchcock is given only one dimension here: an arrogant egomaniac who was unpleasant to everyone around him.

That includes his wife, Alma (Imelda Staunton), his professional collaborator and, as portrayed here, his personal enabler.

Miller’s Hedren sometimes looks whipsawed as Hitchcock moves from subtly derogatory asides to flat-out sexual demands. If she bends, though, she never breaks, even when we know in hindsight she could endanger her career by defying a man of Hitchcock’s power.

In the end, it’s less a story of loss or triumph than of sadness, asking a question ominous enough to be worthy of a Hitchcock film: At what point does the price for art become too high?

Total Film: The Modern Guide to The Movies Anthony Hopkins stars in Hitchcock trailer: watch now

Hitchcock, the biopic of Sir Alfred that hones in on the period he made classic slasher Psycho, has been teasing with images and posters for some time now, and at last a trailer has arrived.

Anthony Hopkins look to be gunning for awards as the portly auteur, undergoing extensive make-up and fat-suit embellishments to nail the resemblance. Hidden under that chin, the man who was once Hannibal Lecter is unrecognisable.

The trailer hints that the behind-the-scenes antics were as tense as what ended up on screen, with Hitch struggling to secure funding, and clashing with his wife and business partner, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).

Scarlett Johansson makes an impression as Janet Leigh, rocking the period garb with impeccable style. And, of course, there's plenty of references to Hitchcock's darkly humorous streak.

Watch the Hitchcock trailer below now:

We don't get to size up Jessica Biel's portrayal of Vera Miles in this first trailer, but the potent mix of cinephilia, '60s style and a smattering of scene-stealing performances has us hooked.

And that shot of the Master of Suspense presiding over the swinging lightbulb scene from Psycho's climax had us rubbing our hands with glee.

Directed by Anvil: The Story Of Anvil's Sacha Gervasi, Hitchcock opens in the UK on 8 February 2013.
