Tom Jenkins And Simon Sharp, best known for their short film work, are set to rewrite and direct Giants at Sony Pictures, Deadline reports.
The film follows a race of aliens who, not realizing that they're only 1/4 inch by human standards, set out to invade the planet Earth after a fallen screw from the Hubble Space Telescope makes them think their world is under attack. On Earth, the invaders wind up bonding with a young boy.
The description suggests a family-friendly approach to a popular science fiction theme, reversed in television series like "Land of the Giants" and in the famous "Twilight Zone" episode "The Invaders". There's also a similar gag in Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," which reads as follows:
"For thousands more years the mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across--which happened to be the Earth -- where due to a terribble miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidently swallowed by a small dog."
Check back for more on Giants as information becomes available.
