TV Review: ‘Arrow’

'Arrow,' an interesting mutant version of the classic “Green Arrow” comic book, at first seems like an odd show to find on a network whose target audience is 18- to 34-year-old females.

Action adventure superhero comic books, after all, are traditionally the turf of boys.

Then, less than five minutes into Wednesday night's premiere episode, star Stephen Amell peels off his shirt.

Suddenly it’s ladies' night.

The well-chiseled Amell plays Oliver Queen, who five years earlier was the spoiled son of a very rich and corrupt family.

One night he and his father were cruising the South Pacific when a storm kicked up and all aboard were presumed lost.

That included the sister of Oliver’s fiancée, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). Consider it only the mildest spoiler that Oliver and the sister were having an inappropriate relationship on the voyage.

In any case, five years pass and Oliver miraculously returns.

On the surface, he’s the same old Ollie. His rich, spoiled friends throw him a party themed to “We Are the Champions.”

But five years on a castaway-friendly island gave Oliver several things besides six-pack abs. He’s great with a bow and arrow and he now knows right from wrong.

Evildoers, beware.

Amell plays Arrow with the proper potent silence as he balances himself between his old world and his new world.

Cassidy starts off well and is likely to get better as Laurel starts to figure things out.

The action, meanwhile, starts almost as quickly as the beefcake.

“Arrow” turns out to be a lively show, probably better than hard-core “Green Arrow” fans expected. That’s a good start.

Food Network’s Guy Fieri sizzles on the appearance circuit at $100K a gig

Guy Fieri, the “celebrity chef” who has become the face of the Food Network, is paid $100,000 for personal appearances, according to the website The Smoking Gun.

Fieri, 44, hosts the show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” a show that celebrates restaurants which serve artery-clogging dishes and deep-fried goodness.

In August, Fieri was paid $100,000 for a 60-minute appearance at the New York State Fair in late August, according to contract documents.

In comparison, his competitor Buddy Valastro, star of TLC’s “Cake Boss,” snags a paltry $65,000 for his gigs.
